Change Your Cup.

2021 will see the EU ban 'some' single use plastics but we'd like to promote the campaign to make a big difference now. Consumer convenience has created a thriving drinks business and driven this waste problem to literally dizzying heights.

Within Johnstown we now have several outlets offering take out drinks and when you include Navan there's considerably more.

We aim to promote the campaign to encourage the significant reduction of the half a million cups being sold everyday in Ireland.

The scale of the waste problem really is horrendous and Johnstown could easily get on board to help make a difference.

Our Target Outlets

We've identified these local outlets on the map as potential candidates to join the www.ConsciousCup.ie Campaign (or simply do something similar) to reduce needless landfill waste.

You can check our progress to see what happens. As we discover those who do support and promote the use of reusable takeaway cups we'll change their icon colour and promote them.

We'll be asking these outlets, or ask for us and let us know.

  1. The Ivy Cafe
  2. Smith's SuperValu
  3. Costa Coffee
  4. Boylesports
  5. Taylor's of Johnstown
  6. Easy B&C
  7. Mario's
  8. Macari's
  9. Mace Johnstown Village
  10. O'Brien's Johnstown
  11. AppleGreen, Kentstown Rd
  12. Maxol Mace Riverside
  13. Texaco, Garlow Cross
  14. Ardboyne Hotel
  15. Navan RFC
  16. Navan Tennis Club
  17. Willow's Bridge Inn

If you know of more outlets or know the answer let us know.

Those marked on the map are potential candidates but some might not offer disposable takeaway cups.

No

After takeaway venues we'll then ask the same of our local schools who sell drinks/soups and offices who use disposable vending cups.

If you don't know why you should support the reuse of cups then read on.

What if

your children threw their drinks cup it in the bin instead of washing it up?

We can only imagine your reaction.

We believe that we all should change our Disposable Takeout Cup since it is one of the largest waste bin fillers currently heading to landfill and it doesn't need to exist.

Have all forms of Disposable Cups outstayed their welcome?

Can disposable cups go in the Recycling Bin?

The recycling logo often refers only to the plastic cup lid and the cardboard sleeve, which can be removed and placed for recycling.

Unless the cup itself proudly announces its recycling credentials then it's heading for landfill because it has a plastic lining which will be around for many years and long after the paper wrapper has gone.

Make a Simple Change

Recycling is not an option whilst these cups have plastic linings and switching to an alternative single-use solution only perpetuates the massive resource use and massive waste production.

Consumers DO NOT need to demand change from retailers when they can simply change their own behaviour. You can continue to enjoy the product without hurting the environment as much.

The new buzz words surrounding takeaway coffee is

REUSABLE CUPS

We're asking all outlets to offer customers reusable takeaway cups. Some already encourage you to bring your own and some will offer a discount if you do.

"The Conscious Cup Campaign is the initiative of a group of concerned individuals who seek to reduce and eventually eliminate the use of disposable cups in Ireland. The campaign hopes to increase the use of reusable cups, by encouraging cafes and other outlets to incentivise this through discounts and loyalty schemes."

Find Navan on the Map and you'll see we're not well represented and good PR for those first to register.

Available to Buy

To find some practical examples to buy we visited our local Smith's SuperValu who had 3 brands of environmentally responsible takeaway coffee cups: a metal canister, a cork cup and one made from bamboo.

Those made of a biodegradable material should never see landfill and may have a more sustainably responsible source whist those with better recyclable qualities delay the inevitable.

These are used purely as examples. Other suitable brands are available elsewhere and we gain no benefit from illustrating these.

Perhaps the real motivating driving force will be for Society to make it 'Cool' to be seen using Reusable Cups and socially unacceptable either not to bring your own or not to be offered one.

Switch to Reusable Products.
