August News in Brief

Saying Goodbye

Whilst still deeply saddened and in shock the Youth of the Johnstown Community gathered in their hundreds to pay their last respects to their friend Michael Leddy, 15, who passed away after a tragic accident on holidays in Lanzarote.

An Opportunity

All 38 Football Clubs in County Meath received a visit during July as the FAI met for their AGM. It was fantastic to see both Balrath FC and Bohermeen Celtic FC create and open new football pitches.

There are still no plans locally for Johnstown FC to have a pitch.

Perhaps, as a fitting tribute to Mickey, the Youth of Johnstown could help maintain the soccer pitch area in the Johnstown People's Park and encourage its informal use for sports,

Metges Rd Apartments

Two public protests in July gained the support of Navan Councillors and many residents but the August 8th deadline has now passed for submissions objecting to the high density landmark apartment block development on Metges Rd.

Having successfully won appeals to prevent all the previous development plans for this site objectors now await a decision from An Bord Pleanála to see if the future shape of Johnstown will dramatically change.

Latest Update from the opposition group.

Playground

Navan Councillors unanimously rejected the proposed playground site outside the School Campus in Johnstown Wood at their Meeting on 15th July.

We await future proposals but suspect that only a change in land designation will gain the public's support.

We've created a map to illustrate all the Public Playgrounds within reasonable distance around Meath.

Ace the Exams

Joe McCormac previously featured a series with us on how to ACE the Exams and starting this September he launches his ACE Maths tuition classes in the Navan Education Centre.

Find out more in his website.

School Information

Before students start, return or even move school it's important for parents to arm themselves with information and to link to every available resource.

It's surprising how many local schools cater to the Navan student population. We've mapped them together with their online links but we need your help to uncover more.

It is disappointing to see the need for more portacabins instead of constructing the planned classrooms at Colaiste na Mi. However we believe that work will start in the coming weeks.

Even more disappointing is that the new building for St Mary's Special Needs School doesn't have a start date after 5 years of waiting.

Support These

Haven Pilates Studio, Feel Fit Gym and recently CrossFit Meath each recently opened venues. Find out now what is available within walking distance.

In order to improve our Navan Club listing we're developing a map to illustrate where those listed can be located.

Check out the guide and help us add to it with your Sport.

2 Thinner Fat Boy's Retire

Mark and Peter handed over the reins at the end of July having led the O'Briens Fat Boys & Ladybirds group for over 3½ years.

They've helped members loose weight, get fitter and raising close to €18,000 for local charities.

We look forward to discovering who's going to follow in their footsteps and continue the great work.

Coffee Cup Crisis

With several outlets serving takeout coffee were helping to promote the campaign to encourage consumers to switch to reusable takeaway cups.

New Cafe Opens

Feel Fit Gyms opened their new Easy B&C Cafe for an early preview on Saturday Aug 10th.

This is apt timing to encourage visitors to take their own reusable takeaway cups.

Portable Rainwater

The recent heavy rains don't water flower baskets well and news of the Tidy Towns new portable rainwater buggy has traveled across Ireland.

Simple and effective it means they can reach places without a nearby tap, without using cars and more importantly use harvested rainwater.

Flower Updates

Wildflowers are growing slowly at the former Petrol Station verge but some need frost and won't appear until next year.

The soil is of dreadful quality but that's what wildflowers prefer since it gives them a fighting chance to outshine the weeds and grass.

The fence line climbers have also flowered.

More work is planned for autumn to provide flowers in Spring.

Well done to the creator of this beautiful display in Old Johnstown Village.
