October News in Brief
St Martha's Bridge flowers
The display was recently removed having created a colourful bridge over the summer months. The bedding plants were recycled into the Athlumney Hall verge on Metges Road where the surviving chives and thyme will have a long term home.
It's unlikely hanging basket display would survive the winter chill from the river. No strawberry plants survived or matured but next year's planting will see a much larger percentage of alternative biannual plants and herbs.
Safer Meath Campaign
September's protest attracted a few hundred to Navan's Kennedy Plaza.
October 16th is the Joint Policing Committee public meeting where a key item for discussion is likely to be the Police HQ relocation to West Meath.
Halloween Events
The children of every household look forward to the traditional costume and sack of sweets but teens upwards look forward to bigger scares. We've created a guide to show what 'scares' and events are being created locally.
Fireworks
Fireworks torment pet owners so we've taken advice on how to keep them calm.
Rugby Season
September saw the World Cup get well underway and Ireland is expected to go far.
Navan RFC kicked off their home games recently having been promoted to a higher division.
Navan ladies continue tag rugby every Monday and there's over 35s social rugby every Thursday.
Inclusive rugby is every Sunday and youth training Saturday and most other evenings.
Brexit Impact
Long awaited, over debated and we're not sure that anyone actually knows the full impact.
If it happens without any agreement it'll cause issues: we might get Duty Free from Up North but will there be limits imposed before Christmas?
UK car licence holders could face driving tests and will there be a change to car imports ?
What will happen for visitors with roaming mobile phone rates?
Nov 1st will hopefully reveal some positives.
Tidy Towns Results
Another successful year for Johnstown Tidy Towns with an increased score on last year and you can read the official report.
Plenty of action points mentioned to keep working on which we'll hear more about in the coming weeks.
Pedestrians or Lorry Space
The National Make Way Day in September reminded us that pavements should be clear for pedestrians and it brought attention to delivery vans at the Johnstown Shopping Centre. Just because it has been happening daily for years does not give it the green light to continue and a dedicated delivery area should be created.
Sundays in the Park
Great to see the Johnstown FC Academy make use of the JPP each Sunday. We hope to see more activities for local residents and would be delighted to see this become a permanent feature.
More Apartments
It's hard to not notice the growth of Johnstown and plans for the Metges road Apartments next to the Bailis Village is due to be decided by An Bord Plenela next month.
Another is planned to replace the Athlumney Centre.
Road Congestion
First mentioned in 2017 but nothing has been done to reduce the congestion which is now settling into routine. We think it has become significantly worse than previous years.
Despite St Stephen's School helping to increase the student drop off flow the sheer volume of vehicles using Metges Rd and Bothar Sion in all directions at peak times is frustrating many.
The Council's position is that the Johnstown Roundabout is pedestrian priority and there's no immediate plans to change it.
If the 'bottle neck' wasn't the actual roundabout it would simply congest the Dublin Road junctions at St Martha's Bridge and to the south at Johnstown Village.
Active Teens
We finally have activities for teenagers with MLSP and Community Sports Hub Navan hosting Tuesday night Olympic Handball at St Stephen's National School.
Christmas Markets
Dates are slowly starting to appear with the Navan Christmas Market at the Newgrange Hotel Nov 17th and the Ardboyne Hotel Nov 24th.
The Saturday series of Harvest Markets at the Solstice, Navan has started to attract a regular crowd. There's one more on Oct 12th.
Ace Results
With the Junior Cert results recently out many will have their eye on this years exams. Great to see local man Joe McCormack Ace his business accreditation in September.
Give Blood
October marks a significant change for previous UK residents and a call for more to donate regularly.
Litter Control
All the bus stops suffer from littering and need waste bins. There's hope to have a Big Belly Smart bin at the Metges Rd bus stop opposite the Johnstown Shopping Centre.
Unfortunately dog waste bins will not be provided because the Council's position is that owners should take the waste home to dispose of it. At public venues such as Blackwater Park the situation is different where owners are likely to have travelled by car / public transport and therefore bins are provided.
Athlumney Riverside Walk
If you've been there recently you'll likely have been avoiding the nettles and thistles on one low level section. Despite the path having been strimmed during the summer it soon became over run again.
At the Old Kilcarn Bridge the Meath River Rescue boat slipway construction is well underway.
GP Service
New families will be adding to the Navan population but there's not enough GP's to cope.
Bus Service
Bus Eireann service came under fire recently after reports of busses not arriving and those that do have insufficient capacity.
Pre Loved Clothing
Don't be tempted to quickly donate your old clothes to kerbside collections.
There's so many alternatives.
What ?
We think that this packaging logo has caused tremendous confusion.
If you think it means recyclable product you're going to be REALLY annoyed.
Stop Single Use
We surveyed the local area and we're not sure what to make of the change from plastic to compostable cups?
Does Ireland really need 200 million cups as waste cups?
