Dog Fouling Signage and Waste Bag Dispensers

Erected in June 2018 the 4 Dog Bag dispensers have been trialed successfully at the Johnstown Peoples Park and are serving their purpose. The intention is now to have dispensers at 'hot spots' to encourage owners to take responsibility.

The JTT will be asking the community to advise them of where best to instal these once the Council have provided them.

Signs are only useful if they are read and understood. The issue is that some owners are clearly not interested or don't care about the health risk to both people and other pets..

Stop the Messages!

When volunteers go out to prevent the spread of litter they do not expect to be cleaning up after dog owners.

Owners abandoning their dog's mess even when they do use a bag is not acceptable. We can understand that they might not wish to carry it with them for the entire walk and that they might fully intended to collect it on their return but it's on the floor, in a public space and awaiting a mishap.

Why No Bins?

The JTT have previously asked this question of the Council and the response is that owners should take any form of litter home with them. We can see the logic in their stance since you're likely to be out locally to your home and they can't afford to provide a bin for each type of waste every few metres just for convenience.

If you visit a park such as Balrath Woods or Blackwater it is quite different since you're not near your home and dog waste bins are usually provided for health reasons.

Bag Dispenser Locations?

As a regular litter collector I see where the dog mess has been left IN BAGS. I've proposed the bus stop next to the Athlumney Centre on Metges Road as one potential location but where would you suggest?

Send the JTT a suggestion.
