Traffic Controller

Is it time we employ help?

In line with our Political Statement we publish this article because it has merit in enhancing Our Community.

Jenny McHugh, Principal of St Stephens National School, has called on the Council to improve safety for school children.

In previous articles we've reviewed the traffic congestion at the school and with more new homes being occupied, especially at the Dunville Estate, more vehicles are adding to the congestion.

It has now been 2 years since our first article on the problem and it appears that nothing has changed.

Are parents concerns not being supported ?

Extract from a posting made by the School Principal:

"A traffic warden is urgently needed in Johnstown. In the morning the traffic is gridlocked, backed up to the Kentstown Road.

Large schools bring large numbers of children. Large numbers of children bring a need for planning for their safety. The need for a whole review of traffic including large trucks is urgent.

The immediate appointment of a traffic warden at the pedestrian crossing outside the educational campus would help the children cross safety and help the flow of traffic coming from the Dunville housing estate and ease the flow of school traffic entering the campus.

Equally important is the opening of the back gate in the campus itself. This would mean the traffic would enter the campus and exit onto the Old Johnstown Rd which would reduce the number of the cars around the campus. At the moment traffic jams cause obstruction and if emergency services were required they would not be able to get it creating a huge health and safety risk."
