Information or Pollution?

Should political posters be banned in the runup to elections ?

In line with our Political Statement we publish this article because it has merit in enhancing Our Community.

We're entering the time period when candidates up for Local Election increase their self promotion using all means available. A statement from Alan Lawes to all local election candidates advocated self restraint and compliance with a poster ban.

Election Posters, Door 2 Door visits and paper flyers are fully expected but this year there has been formal requests made by community groups not to use plastic posters.

What's the Problem with Posters?

We are constantly being educated, and often taxed, for our disposable attitude towards waste but we hear no mention of this at election time. Politicians and those in positions of power should set the example and practice what they will undoubtedly be asked to preach?

Election posters can be erected for 30 days and must be removed within 7 days of voting. That's not good value for the environment.

We are being taught:

Avoid, Reduce, ReUse and Recycle.

Why contradict this simple message when it comes to electing people who will end up promoting this back to us?

2 Main Issues

1. Plastic Pollution

Despite being highly suitable as poster backings most were derived from crude oil. Some bear recyclable credentials with recyclable/recycled content and most will claim low carbon footprints but the issue is simply the shear volume of waste produced. potentially 100's of candidates across the entire country will generate many thousands of these posters as waste at the end of May.

'Politicians Plastic Pollution Month' is a very apt description that should not be happening.

2. Visual Pollution

During last year's Presidential election we didn't see any posters within Johnstown after the Tidy Towns Group asked candidates to refrain from hanging them.

However with so many candidates running for Navan Local Election it's not going to be an easy option especially for less well known independent candidates.

The Request

How else would you discover who the candidates are?

Door 2 Door visits and paper flyers are not the target of this anti poster campaign.

As the article banner image showed when used to massive excess all advertising banners become overkill and pointless. We think that after you've seen them once you too will not notice them again.

Candidates in other areas in europe have been banned from advertising outside of specific fixed locations where the backing boards are provided for them to apply paper posters.

We'd like to see this happen here.
