Condolences

We convey the Communities deepest sympathies to the family, friends and fellow students mourning the tragic loss of Evan Fitzgerald, 15, on Thursday 5th December.

click for a little more.

On the evening of Saturday Dec 8th friends gathered on the green outside the Johnstown School Campus to pay paid tribute and seek support from each other. Music played, flowers were laid, candles lit and balloons released in a fitting and respectful send off.

On Monday 9th Dec students from Colaiste Na Mi Secondary School lined the street as a Guard of Honour whilst the Funeral cavalcade passed through Johnstown. It was incredibly powerful sight and a credit to the school.

Talk More

We should all open up that conversation and on occasion you might want to be really honest and upfront enough to say "No, I'm not ok".

It's OK to ask for help, to talk, to share, to off load, and you'll discover help will be there.

CORE Ireland

Established in 2015 CORE Ireland has been helping residents to get involved in Community activities.

We hope to make Community Voluntary Groups a feature of our January Edition and this one was first in our list of new discoveries.

They produce a seasonal magazine which you can view online.

Magazine: https://coreireland.ie/magazine/

Bernard Kenny, founder and chairman, explains on their website what exactly the group is about, visit the site and get involved:

"CORE Ireland is a place for people to come and volunteer, to experience the ‘Joy of Giving’ and to do something worthwhile for the community in the community. It is a place to find friendship and fellowship amongst the members of CORE and for people on the receiving end to feel less isolated or alone.

CORE also help to make the more vulnerable members of our community feel cared for and assured that they too are valued members of our community.

CORE is for people to come to and find, within themselves, new strengths and abilities. We want them to find a sense of fulfilment, purpose, enjoyment and to have fun and be creative. Each person who comes to CORE changes CORE by bringing their own unique personality and ideas. They help change and develop it. The strength and power of CORE is in its members and volunteers.

It’s about service. One person helping another and in return, they’re helping themselves. I believe that the best way to help yourself is to help somebody else."

Seasonal Decorations

Navan lights up for Christmas but what about Johnstown?

Is there something more we can do?

click for a little more.

Navan unveiled it's modernist Christmas tree cone and street decorations but we would like to see "Nollaig Shona" lit in festive lights since we've only seen 'Merry Christmas' in Navan.

The Johnstown Shopping Centre shop decorations appeared in early November and they do provide festive cheer.

Old Johnstown Village has trees and lights and so too has the Kentstown Road Apartments.

Johnstown Tidy Towns will again make the Johnstown roundabout sparkle soon but it's a bright spot so they're very easy to miss.

Hopefully the January sales will provide more led lights if you have suggestions on where to light up?

PLEASE ensure your decorations, cars and sheds are all secure to prevent theft.

Paper Waste

It's typically the season of mass consumption so please ask Santa & his helpers to use wrapping paper and packaging sensibly.

click for a little more.

Santa of years gone bye used loads of wrapping paper but didn't consider the recyclable value or cost to the environment.

If you have plastic or glitter coated wrapping paper then it can't be recycled and neither is sellotape so chose the paper that scrunches up and doesn't rebound if you want to recycle it. Use string or fabric strips instead of plastic ribbon and reduce the amount of plastic sticky tape too.

A better option is to use gift bags which you can reuse.

Be kind and give the environment a gift not a burden this Christmas.

Before you view our article and video clip please bear the following in mind which will really make a difference to those in need:

  • Stop putting clothing into the waste bin.
  • Stop giving clothing to the anonymous 'man with a van' who collects from your doorstep unless you truly know that they are genuine.
  • Stop putting clothes into 'Clothes Banks' unless you've done your research and know the charity receives all the clothes deposited.
  • Do give directly to the Charity Shops those items which could be of value if bought by local people.
  • Do give all types of clothing that can be reworn to Helping the Homeless.
  • Don't assume that you can't buy new clothes to give to Charity & Homeless Appeals. New 'Socks & Jocks' are always needed.

NeDOC Moved

The temporary 6mth relocation from Navan Hospital to Dunshaughlin Healthcare Centre took place from Tuesday 26th November.

click for a little more.

We've know for several months that families new to the Navan area struggle to join a GP Practice but if they relied on NeDOC then they'll need to travel further.

Originally reported in the Meath Chronicle (P13, Sat 19th Oct 2019) that Doctor on Call (NEDOC), currently at Navan Hospital was temporarily relocating to Dunshughlin Health Care Unit for six months from November to Spring 2020 has caused widespread concern.

Few would disagree that a portacabin for Doctor on Call should not have been the long term solution and having been in use for nearly 2 decades the facilities have been in need of refurbishment for a very long time.

What concerns many is that it's not relocating to one of potentially several vacant buildings in Navan or even another part of the hospital. Navan is not only central but it is the most populated area in County Meath and coupled with the approaching winter weather any extra distance is unwelcome.

The use of the word "temporary" and the distrust surrounding any government building plans for healthcare centres has everyone thinking the same question..... " Is it going to come back? "

Shortest Day

The darkness sets in so early now but it's great for gathering around the fireplace. After the morning of December 22nd it's going to start to change.

Both the Newgrange Monument and the Hill of Tara will be busy as usual on the solstice weekend.

Darker earlier in the evenings does mean the stars are usually easier to view and if you have young children perhaps it's a chance to show them what's up there. App's for your smartphone such as Google 'Sky Map' can be extremely useful and at the time of writing this Saturn, Venus, Pluto and Neptune were all visible at 5pm in the southern sky!

Finally a request to pedestrians and cyclists to ensure they can be seen on dark evenings since our street lighting isn't good enough and HiVis reflective clothing is highly recommended.

Pandora's Box

How would you spend €15k a year on the Navan Community?

Could our elected Councillors be seen as Santa Claus with Taxpayers Money?

click for a little more.

Our elected Councillors have voted to accept an increase of €3,000 in their annual 'discretionary' fund to give to community groups. (reference posted video clip in May)

Councillor Alan Lawes spoke to us about his objection, to the 'discretionary' nature of this fund stating that it is Taxpayers Money but they will have absolutely no say in how it is distributed which is undemocratic.

He goes further to suggest that the money granted to groups could potentially influence future elections by giving current candidates up for re-election a potentially unfair advantage over new candidates.

We understand that there are Council controlled checks and measures to account for its fair and proper use. We have also seen the fund be put to good use and are in no way suggesting any misconduct or inappropriate use has taken place. The question of who gets a donation and why is something left for the Councillor's conscious.

Pandora's Box has been opened and all eye's will now be focussed on how each Councillor distributes €75k each over the next 5 years.

Tidy Community

Johnstown Tidy Towns held their AGM at the start of December after another successful year.

Support received at the St Stephen's Christmas Market should see more volunteers help out with projects to improve our environment.

click for a little more.

The JTT have been making contact with local Schools to target projects that can directly involve the school children. The funds raised at Smith's SuperValu bag packs is being pledged to fund ongoing school support.

Extract below from posting by Johnstown Tidy Towns:

"One of the main challenges facing us as a group is with the lack of volunteers. We totally understand people have families and commitments, especially at weekend where sports play a major part in your Saturdays and Sundays but without your support and feet on the ground, we just can't do this. With this in mind going forward, next year, and as the evenings get brighter and warmer ( here's hoping 🤞) we would like to get together on one week day evening, and possibly every weekend instead of every second weekend.

This will only happen though with your help and support.

We are aiming to Target one estate every weekend ( this will be highlighted the week before to give plenty of notice) and we would love to see you and your families come along if we are on your road/green space and give a hand out. As usual all equipment will be provided.

This initiative will not be starting until next year."

Rare Sight

It might not appear as a significant new landmark but these were once very rare facilities in Johnstown. We hope it will be used properly and it appears that every bus stop is having them.

It also appears that Bothar Sion bus stops are having a Bus Shelter soon too.

Plan 'Bee'

We visited The Orchard Estate to discover what plans the Resident's Group has for encouraging wildlife and especially the Bee's

click for a little more.

An article in the Meath Chronicle told us that some of our hedgerows are 100's of years old and in need of protection. One of these runs alongside the open lawn of the Estate and the residents have established a plan to protect it.

There's also planting to encourage the bees which we'll leave as a surprise to hopefully see in late January.

You can find the Orchard Estate on Google Maps here.

Water Logged

We've been visiting the Athlumney Riverside path to document the changes through the seasons.

Autumn is stunning but it comes at a price.

click for a little more.

After the recent heavy rains and with the high river level it's no surprise to know that some path areas are not just wet, they're underwater. An entire section of the low level path was impassible in November and we recommend avoiding it during the wet weather.

You'll still need a firm grip on the raised path but it's well worth it.

See our previous articles for more.

Congestion Builds

It doesn't suit everyone but there is one simple act which many more could and should try.

click for a little more.

With around 1600 students our video clip last month highlighted the impact the school traffic has on the entire neighbourhood. It's clear that there is no quick fix solution to make the car journey any better and what we see daily is most definitely here to stay for the time being.

The only long term solution is a complete and drastic lifestyle change which will involve walking, cycling and car shares.

With climate change firmly on the agenda either we choose to change our behaviour or we fully expect changes to be imposed on us either through taxes or more traffic congestion.

Is it time for the Council and the Schools to lead and communicate the way forward?

Car Thefts

A rare spate of thefts from driveways in November has residents and Neighbourhood Watch Groups on high alert.

click for a little more.

Advice posted on Navan South Communities Unite

Dear Members,

We have had a lot of car thefts across the County of Meath in numerous locations in the last number of weeks, not just in the Navan area.

Whilst some of these have been crimes of opportunity, other thefts may have been due to high technology being used to gain access to vehicles.

Working with our local Garda and Meath Crime Prevention, there are a number of helpful suggestions motorists can do to help prevent theft as follows:

  • Do not leave keys in ignition whilst car is in your driveway or outside your dwelling, especially on cold/frosty mornings. (Can compromise insurance).
  • Do not leave keys in your hall / kitchen counter, or any other visible locations where thieves may have easy access.
  • Consider using a steering lock.
  • Consider using a tracking system.
  • Consider fitting an immobiliser or alarm.
  • Do not leave devices, laptops, expensive sunglasses, or shopping bags visible in your car overnight.

More suggestions can be found on the attached leaflets given to us by Meath Crime Prevention. Please read at your own leisure.

We ask all members to be mindful towards each other regardless of the circumstances of theft, this can be a traumatic time for the victims of crime, and they need neighbourly support and compassion during this time.

As always, If anyone notices suspicious activity in your neighbourhood, please contact your local Garda Station on 046-9021445.

We thank all community members for their vigilance and community spirit being helpful and kind towards each other, and always looking out for your neighbours.

Your Friendly NSCU Admin Team.

Frozen Windows

How many of us defrost the car windscreen with a kettle of hot water, chemical spray, ice scraper or even worse do you leave the car running unattended hoping the heater will work fast?

There's a quick alternative.

click for a little more.

It's not a new invention or anything complicated but it's been doing the rounds on Social Media to use a resealable plastic bag filled with hot tap water.

Simply fill the bag, seal it and slowly wipe it over your car windscreen like a sponge....... it really works! It doesn't create a slippery puddle of ice to then slip on minutes later.

Our bag burst after 3 window clears and we should not have been rushing so much to tear it on some ice. Even though this compostable type bag on it's 4th reuse we suggest using something thicker.

For an even better solution buy and use an external windscreen sheet that simply hooks through your car doors and folds up for storage in the boot.

Mouldy Windows

Want to stop the morning condensation on bedroom windows and prevent the black mold too?

click for a little more.

The ice cold mornings signal the return of damp windows which highlights an unhealthy home environment. Moisture is naturally in the air but it soon brings with it the black mold.

There is a practical reason it appears but more importantly there is a practical way to reduce and even prevent it.

New Homes

The 46 three & four bed homes in the newest Johnstown Estate of Kilcarn Wood are now coming to market ranging from €280k to €340k.

More Development

Last month we highlighted the areas for planned housing under the Navan Development Plan 2009. It should not come as a surprise to see yet another site in South Navan apply to An Bord Pleanala for fast track planning approval.

click for a little more.

The ground preparation works for Fargonstown started in earnest in November after the Council announced the long awaited housing development of up to 1,600 homes.

Now the site off Academy Street (near Maxol Garage) has submitted plans for 544 homes via the 'fast track' planning application directly to An Bord Pleanala.

Homes are needed everywhere in Ireland and few contest this but the infrastructure and services for these new families is rarely mentioned in a positive light.

Interestingly this new development does show a playground within the communal park but will it actually be created.

We notice too that the site directly north is marked for a future school development which quite possibly is for Ar Na Ri Primary School who are currently located in portacabins next to Navan RFC and Navan Tennis Club.

See Belmount Planning Application

Google Map showing the site currently occupied by fields in light brown .

Will it Change?

The approval to remove the large tree line on the west side of Metges Road, from the bus stop to the Bailis Village, in favour of 4 apartment blocks will dramatically change the character of Metges Road, and Johnstown.

click for a little more.

No one would dispute new homes are needed but on this particular site should they outweigh the communities objections, the government bodies who are promoting initiatives for reducing Climate Change, enhancing Biodiversity & Wildlife, encouraging more tree planting etc ?

Conditional planning permission was granted in October and we are awaiting signs of either construction work or another planning application submission.
