September News in Brief

A New Local Guide

To illustrate that there are many sporting activities in the area we've compiled a Navan Neighbourhood Guide.

(NOT a sponsored advert)

We need your help to complete it with the clubs and venues that we've missed.

Roundabout Repaired

Johnstown Roundabout

Sept 2nd brought an unannounced evening visit to the Johnstown Roundabout and traffic came to a crawl for a few hours. We no longer have any craters in both the road or inner kerb but whist Johnstown is still a housing 'construction site' we're optimistic how long before it will need a revisit.

Back to School

May walking group to Scoil Eanna

Schools have returned and the traffic has returned.... but has it improved slightly?

Time will tell if the new drop and go arrangements at St Stephen's National School will help the traffic flow more smoothly.

Will we see the return of organised school walking busses/trains and more cyclists?

We recommend you visit our Local Schools Guide to ensure you've connected online with your children's school.

Friday October 4th is the Junior Cert Results date.

Ben Cherry

The community has rallied around to raise funds to support Ben Cherry, a popular sporting teenager, who was recently diagnosed with Leukemia.

Auctions of sporting memorabilia at Navan RFC in August and just recently at Skryne GFC brought communities and teams together to raise funds.

Goes to show us that sport isn't always about winning, or even taking part, it's about Team Spirit and Family too.

Food Market

September 21st is the first date for Navan's Harvest Market and we're looking forward to seeing local food producers, makers, growers etc.

Irish Tasters

Well done to Smiths SuperValu for hosting their in-store food market showcasing award winning Irish products with several stalls at the end of August. They proved to be very popular and we look forward to seeing many more.

We were especially impressed to see a bottle return scheme being promoted by a new soft drinks producer.

Changes

It was a surprise to see Taylor's of Johnstown close their restaurant.

Any business closure is a loss to the community.

Halloween Next Month

2018 Horizontal Fireworks in Johnstown.

It may appear a little early to mention but last year's event made local headlines because of the wrong reasons. For 2 weeks Johnstown was disturbed with teens sending fireworks directly at people and cars over Halloween.

In the run up to next month's event we parents have time to better educate our teens or it could be someone you love urgently visiting A&E.

We'll have a listing of the organised local events in next months edition if you'd like to let us know where you recommend visiting.

Policing Meeting

Perhaps fortuitous timing, to be held before Halloween, the Joint Policing Committee meet the Public in Kells on Oct 16th.

We wonder what progress and updates they will present since last year?

June 2018 headline in the Meath Chronicle but will there be any update?

Rathbeggan Activity Centre Closes.

Having entertained families for several years the business closed in early September.

We hope the insurance costs will get under control before we lose any more from our 'Go Out & Explore' Guide.

Mickey Tribute

The Rep Ire v Switzerland Euro Qualifier at the Aviva Stadium, Sep 5th, managed a 1-1 draw but all eyes were on the screen before the game started to honour Mickey Leddy, local teenager who passed last month in Lanzarote.

Well done to The Fat Boys and Ladybirds and O'Briens Johnstown for raising a whopping €4750.

Walterstown G4M

Well done to Walterstown G4M who took part in a blitz in Erins Isle Gaa and winning the ‘Team of the Day’ for a second time, voted by all other participating teams on the day.

Ace the Exams

Joe McCormac previously featured a series with us on how to ACE the Exams and starting this September he launches his ACE Maths tuition classes in the Navan Education Centre.

Find out more in his website.

Local Activities

2 Google Calendars show What's On for both Regular and Special activities for the foreseeable future.

If you recommend an event coming up we'll help promote it to others and our aim is not just to read about things but for you to go, do, participate and enjoy them!
