Carnivals are thrilling, and none so much as the Rio Carnival, which ended yesterday in the city known for Sugarloaf Mountain and the open-armed effigy of Jesus Christ. Each year, glorious floats and hordes of elaborately dressed paraders fill the streets in competing groups or alas [ITALS] in a spectacle that draws tourists from around the world. This year's party was expected to break records, attracting 8 million revellers and injecting R$5.5-billion (over R17-billion) into the local economy. Held from February 28 and ending yesterday, the Rio Carnival featured, as is tradition, a blend of parades arranged by the city's samba schools, lively street parties known as blocos [ITALS] and grand masquerade balls. ..
