There was a point in history when one Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela was possibly one speech away from being canonised by the Vatican, such was his global appeal. And if he had stopped shaving, grown his hair, straightened it to about 30cm, parted it down the middle and started wearing flowing robes and sandals, there would have been some grass-consuming, petrol-guzzling cult in the Eastern Cape that started calling him the Son of Man...
